What to wear to your portrait session?<\/h2>\n

The answer to this question is so IMPORTANT to the success of your portrait! People really stress about their\u00a0portrait clothing – for good reason.<\/p>\n

Here are some ideas\u2026<\/p>\n

1) Be true to yourself.<\/h4>\n

Like the clothes you are wearing!\u00a0 That might seem like a silly statement BUT if you wear something just because you think it will pass the “what to wear” test and you actually don’t even care for that particular dress\/shirt\/pants, trust me, you’re not going to like it any better in a portrait. Look in the mirror and make sure your outfit fits you well and flatters your figure.\u00a0 For a family portrait, the MOM should pick out her outfit first and then dress everyone else to compliment what she is wearing.\u00a0 Mom gets to be queen supreme in the situation.<\/p>\n

2) Coordinate with your environment.<\/h4>\n

Natural, earthy, muted\u00a0tones work best for natural locations.\u00a0 Go for solids, semi-solids, and small prints.\u00a0 Jeans are always good.\u00a0 Urban settings can handle brighter colors, patterns, and dressier clothes. \u00a0Avoid:<\/strong> stripes, chevrons, big plaids, strong graphics.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want your clothes to be the most prominent part of your portrait.\u00a0 And\u2026unless you are the bride and groom, avoid:<\/strong> white and black.\u00a0 (There are always exceptions \u2013 just ask!)<\/p>\n

3) Just say NO to the portrait uniform!<\/h4>\n

It\u2019s important to coordinate portrait clothing but unless you wear exactly matching outfits in real life, you shouldn\u2019t wear them for your portrait session. Coordinate in color families, shades of color, complimenting colors.\u00a0 Mix up textures and small patterns. Check out examples from our Family Portrait Gallery for ideas: Click HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n

4) Dress on the same scale of casual\/formal.<\/h4>\n

If one person in the portrait looks like they are going to a formal dinner and another looks ready for the rodeo, that just won’t work! Find the sweet spot between dressy and casual and have everyone on the same page of the portrait playbook. Tip: Usually more dressy clothes are going to work better in an urban or architectural setting. If we’re in the woods, fields, etc., it’s wise to go with a more casual approach.<\/p>\n

5) Use layers.<\/h4>\n

Jackets, sweaters, vest, and accents such as scarves photograph well and can sometimes help hide body parts that you are sensitive to!\u00a0 Layers add visual interest without being distracting.\u00a0 Layers are AWESOME!<\/p>\n

6) Everyone should wear the same tonal range so that the clothing blends.<\/h4>\n

One or two people wearing much lighter or much darker clothing will stand out from the rest. \u00a0The lightest part of the portrait will stand out and the darkest part of the portrait will recede.<\/p>\n
