Destination Family Portraits in Boone, NC and the North Carolina High Country

Every year, families from Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and across North Carolina travel to Boone, NC and the North Carolina High Country for family portrait sessions in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Why do families travel to Boone, NC for family portraits?

Boone and the NC High Country offer cooler mountain temperatures, dramatic Blue Ridge scenery, and access to portrait locations that do not exist anywhere else in the state. Add a fully guided process from planning through delivery, and the result is a portrait experience that is genuinely difficult to replicate anywhere closer to home.

Why Families Drive to the NC Mountains for Their Portraits

There is a version of summer in North Carolina that most people know well: sticky, heavy, run for the air conditioning by ten in the morning.

And then there is summer in the NC High Country, which is something else entirely. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, evenings that drop fast and make you glad you brought a light layer.

The kind of air that makes you want to stay outside rather than escape it.

When the air is comfortable, everything about a portrait session changes. Kids have more energy and less meltdown. Parents relax instead of managing the heat. Nobody is watching the clock waiting for it to be over.

And then families arrive at their location on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Boone and realize something else entirely is happening. The mountain scenery is breathtaking at the end of a summer day. The light goes warm and low, and the ridges layer themselves in deep, quiet blues that stretch as far as you can see.

Clients tell us they had no idea it would look like this. That combination, comfortable air, golden evening light, and those breathtaking mountain views, is why families drive up from across North Carolina to create their portraits here.

What Fall Family Portraits in the Blue Ridge Mountains Actually Look Like

When fall arrives in the High Country, it does not happen all at once. The color moves down from the higher elevations over several weeks, layering the ridges in red, orange, and gold while the air turns cool and dry and the skies go that particular shade of blue that only happens in the mountains in October. Families who schedule fall sessions in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Boone tend to find that the season does a significant amount of work for them. The scenery is extraordinary. The light is clear and clean. And because the color window stretches across several weeks rather than peaking in a single weekend, there are many beautiful days to choose from.

What Families Don't Expect About Portrait Sessions in the NC Mountains

Most families arrive expecting beautiful scenery. That part they have seen in photographs. What they do not expect is how the entire experience feels different from a session closer to home.

They do not expect how cooperative the kids are when nobody is overheated. They do not expect how quickly two hours goes by when the setting keeps changing and there is always something worth photographing around the next bend.

Families who come to us from the Piedmont are often surprised to discover how much variety the High Country offers within a single session. The area in and around Boone stretches from the open balds and overlooks of the Blue Ridge Parkway to the wooded valleys near Valle Crucis, the elevation changes around Banner Elk, and the rolling countryside near Blowing Rock. Each environment has its own character and its own light. We know all of them well enough to match the right setting to the right family on the right evening.

They also do not expect what it feels like to drive home afterward. Not just with a session behind them, but with a full day in the mountains, portraits made in a place they will remember, and something genuinely worth looking forward to at their viewing appointment.

Where Family Portrait Sessions Take Place in Boone, NC and the High Country

Burton Photography has been creating portraits across the NC High Country for over thirty years, and the range of locations available here is one of the things that makes every session genuinely different.

The Blue Ridge Parkway near Boone gives us dramatic overlooks, open fields, forested paths, and historic structures depending on where we go and what your family needs. The broader High Country region, from the valleys around Valle Crucis to the elevations near Banner Elk and the rolling countryside around Blowing Rock, adds even more variety to what is available.

No two sessions look the same because no two families are the same. A family with a toddler and a golden retriever needs something completely different from a multigenerational group of fifteen. We plan every session around your specific family, your mobility, your children's ages, and what the landscape is doing at that particular time of year.

That is not a formula. It is thirty years of knowing this place well enough to use it well.

How a Burton Photography Family Session Works for Out-of-Town Families

The session starts before the session. A complimentary planning consultation, by phone, video conference, or in person, is where we get to know your family and figure out every detail in advance. Location, wardrobe, timing, pets, the kind of portraits you want to end up with. When session day arrives, nothing is being decided on the fly.

Jonathan and I are both at every session, and what that looks like changes moment to moment. Sometimes we are both shooting at the same time, working different angles so nothing gets missed. Other times one of us is behind the camera while the other is working with lighting, coaxing a genuine smile out of a toddler, or quietly fixing a collar before the shot. We have done this together long enough that it runs smoothly without anyone feeling managed. The session feels relaxed because it is.

Afterward, we schedule your viewing appointment. Families who can meet us at our Boone studio see their proofs projected on a big screen, large and beautiful and easy to compare side by side. Families who have returned home view their proofs by video conference. We guide every decision either way, and there is no pressure and no rush. When your finished portraits are ready, we offer complimentary shipping straight to your door. For wall art, we can frequently arrange an in-home installation appointment so everything ends up exactly where it belongs.

Who We Are

You came to the mountains for something worth the drive. We have spent over thirty years making sure it is. Jonathan and Bonnie Burton are based in Boone, NC and have been creating portraits for families across the High Country long enough to know this landscape the way most people know their own neighborhood.

In 2023 and again in 2026, Burton Photography was named National Senior Portrait Photographer of the Year at SYNC, the national juried competition specifically for high school senior portrait photographers. Only a handful of photographers anywhere in the country have won that recognition twice.

"Only glowing words describe Bonnie and Jonathan Burton. Their professionalism and passion about their art is manifested in their finished products but most important of all is their people skills. We have 5 children with spouses and 10 grandchildren. Watching our little ones respond to them was amazing and of course meant the pictures were great. Everyone was made comfortable and happy. Frequently Asked Questions: Destination Family Portraits in the NC Mountains

How far is the drive to Boone, NC from Charlotte, Raleigh, and Winston-Salem?

Boone is approximately two hours from Charlotte, about ninety minutes from Winston-Salem and the Triad, and two and a half to three hours from Raleigh and the Triangle. Most families plan to make a day of it, arriving in the High Country with enough time to explore before their evening session.

What should we expect from a portrait session day in the mountains?

Sessions are held in the evening during golden hour, when the Blue Ridge Mountains are at their most extraordinary. Arrive with time to explore the High Country before we meet. Once we are together, the session moves at a comfortable pace with both of us working alongside your family the whole time. Plan for a beautiful evening in one of the most remarkable places in North Carolina.

What is the best season for family portraits in the NC High Country?

Every season in the High Country offers something genuinely worth working with. Summer brings comfortable temperatures, wildflower fields, and long golden evenings that feel nothing like summer in the rest of North Carolina. Fall delivers crisp air, deep blue skies, and weeks of color rolling down the ridges. Spring has soft light and early blooms. Winter sessions are quiet and dramatic in a completely different way. The best season is the one that works for your family, and we talk through all of it during your planning consultation.

How does the viewing and ordering appointment work for out-of-town families?

We work with out-of-town families all the time and the process is straightforward. When possible, we schedule your viewing appointment while you are still in the area so you can see your proofs projected large on the big screen at our Boone studio. When that is not possible, a video conference viewing works beautifully. We guide you through every decision either way, and finished portraits ship to you at no charge when they are ready.

Can you work with large multigenerational families?

Large multigenerational families are something we handle well and genuinely enjoy. Decades of experience with groups of all sizes means we know how to keep things moving without anyone feeling rushed, how to work with grandparents who may have limited mobility, and how to keep the little ones engaged long enough to get the portraits worth keeping. Our extended family session is designed for larger gatherings and includes a higher portrait credit. Reach out and we will start the conversation.

Do you welcome pets at portrait sessions?

Yes, and we mean it. Pets are part of the family and we treat them that way during the session. The outdoor mountain settings we use are ideal for dogs especially, with plenty of space and fresh air that keeps them relaxed and cooperative. We plan time for the dog to have their own moment, and those portraits are often among the ones families love most.

Do you also photograph high school seniors?

Yes. Senior portraits are a significant part of what we do at Burton Photography, and the NC High Country is one of the most extraordinary settings in the country for them. High school seniors travel to us from across North Carolina and beyond, including families from out of state who make the trip specifically for the scenery, the experience, and portraits that are genuinely worth putting on a wall. Burton Photography has been named National Senior Portrait Photographer of the Year at SYNC twice, most recently in 2026. You can learn more about our senior portrait experience here.

Is Boone, NC a good destination for family portraits?

Yes, and families who make the trip consistently say so. Boone and the NC High Country offer cooler temperatures, extraordinary mountain scenery, and portrait locations along and around the Blue Ridge Parkway that simply do not exist in most of North Carolina. The elevation keeps summers comfortable when the rest of the state is miserable.

The fall color season stretches across several weeks rather than peaking in a single weekend. And the entire experience, from planning through delivery, is guided start to finish by photographers who have worked in this landscape for over thirty years. For families who want a portrait session that feels like a genuine experience rather than an appointment, Boone is worth every mile of the drive.

When should we reach out to start planning?

The earlier the better, especially if you have a specific season in mind. Summer and fall dates book out well in advance, and the most requested dates go quickly. That said, we have a flexible calendar and can often accommodate families with shorter lead times than they expect. Reaching out is always the right first step, and we will let you know what is available.

Is Boone, NC or Asheville better for family portrait sessions?

Boone is the stronger choice for family portrait sessions, and the reasons are practical. Boone sits more than 1,000 feet higher in elevation than Asheville, which keeps summer temperatures roughly five degrees cooler. Boone rarely reaches 90 degrees, while Asheville hits that mark more frequently during peak summer weeks. For families scheduling golden-hour sessions in July or August, that difference is significant.

The portrait locations are also genuinely different. The Blue Ridge Parkway near Boone offers overlooks and open landscapes that work beautifully for family portraits. The overlooks accessible from Asheville tend to be roadside pulloffs designed for cars rather than portrait sessions. And for families driving from Charlotte, Raleigh, or Winston-Salem, Boone and Asheville are not interchangeable destinations. Asheville is more than two hours from Boone by road. They are not neighbors. Choosing Boone means choosing the High Country specifically, and the High Country delivers something the rest of the NC mountains simply cannot match.

What should families know about summer portrait sessions in the NC mountains?

Summer in the NC High Country feels nothing like summer in Charlotte, Raleigh, or Winston-Salem. Average temperatures in Boone run significantly cooler than the Piedmont, evenings cool down fast, and the humidity is dramatically lower. For families used to avoiding outdoor events in July and August, a summer session in the mountains is a genuine surprise. Wildflowers are in bloom from spring through early fall. The light at golden hour on an open bald or along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Boone is warm and long and completely different from anything available in the flatlands. Summer is one of our strongest seasons for family portraits, and families who discover that tend to wonder why they waited.

"When our family decided we wanted portraits during our vacation in Blowing Rock, we researched thoroughly and chose Bonnie and Jonathan. We trusted their years of experience, and they knew the best places to go and the best times to be there. Our family ranged in age from 11 to 74 and every one of us agreed they had made it so much fun. The two hours flew by and we all wished we could do it again the next day. Even after we were back home in Texas, they were patient and wonderful to work with. Those finished pictures are beautiful reminders of a very special time."
