Family Portrait Information and Pricing

Your family is exactly who it is right now. The kids might be little, or they might be home from college for a long weekend. Everyone in the same place, however that comes together. That version of your family deserves a portrait.
Burton Photography is a full-service portrait studio in the NC High Country. Two experienced photographers at every session, a guided process from the first conversation to your finished portraits, and portraits that celebrate who you are to each other.
Here’s how it works.
An Experience Worth Showing Up For

Most families arrive at a portrait session with the same few things on their minds: did we get the outfits right, will the kids cooperate, and will everyone actually enjoy themselves. Those are exactly the things we take off your plate. Wardrobe is sorted in your planning consultation. The kids are our specialty. And the people who show up most reluctantly have a good time.
There’s something that happens when a family works with a husband and wife team: the whole session feels more natural. Jonathan and Bonnie have been doing this together for years, and that easy back-and-forth shows. One of us might be working on posing while the other is directing or keeping the kids laughing. Sometimes we’re both behind the camera. Two experienced photographers working in true partnership can do things one person never could, and the portraits are better for it.
The Blue Ridge Parkway runs for seventy miles through the High Country, and most people only know the overlooks. We know the grove of trees off the side road, the rustic fence line at golden hour, the rocky river nobody else photographs, the wildflower field that peaks for exactly three weeks, the grassy meadow, the country road, the rock outcropping with the long view. Grandfather Mountain, Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, and private properties across Watauga, Avery, and Ashe counties round out what is genuinely an unlimited range of locations. We choose based on your family, not the other way around.
And yes, your pets are absolutely welcome.
Every Session Starts with a Conversation
We schedule a complimentary planning consultation before your session. We want to know your family first.
We’ll talk through everything: where you’d like to go, what to wear, and whether the dog is coming. If you have little ones who need winning over, we come prepared. Think puppets, silly jokes, songs, and enough goofy tricks to get the most camera-shy toddler genuinely laughing. Parents tell us watching us work is half the fun.
Every session is more than just the whole group together. We photograph the kids on their own, just the two of you as a couple, and yes, we give the dog their own moment too.
No two families are the same. No two sessions should look the same either.

Seeing Your Portraits for the First Time
One to two weeks after your session, you’ll come to our studio to view your proofs. We project them on a big screen so you can see them large, beautiful, and side by side.
We guide you through every decision. Nothing is overwhelming. If there are family members who will weigh in on which portraits to order, plan to bring them. This is your one opportunity to view your proofs, and we want the right people in the room. For families who can’t make it to the studio, we can arrange a video conference viewing appointment.

“We have been working with Burton Photography for nine years and Jonathan and Bonnie have done a wonderful job capturing our growing family. We are a big group, totaling 21 now, which presents lots of challenges and opportunities! We absolutely love the large metal prints hanging in our home, and the photo books are stunning.”
