School pictures serve a purpose, but they rarely capture the true personality of your children. As they grow and change each year, you want beautiful, professionally printed portraits that actually look like them.

Many photographers run quick "mini sessions" and simply email you a gallery link of digital files to figure out yourself. We do things differently. Burton Photography is a full-service portrait studio, which means we guide you through the entire process. We help you prepare, we make the 12-minute session incredibly fun, and we help you design finished, professionally printed portraits that you will love living with.

We believe in complete transparency, so we want you to know exactly what to expect before you book.

Portraits on the Parkway is our most popular event of the year, and it is the only event we hold that offers special pricing.


  • Your Registration is a Credit: Your $195 registration fee secures your session time and doubles as a full $195 credit toward your portrait purchase.

  • Exclusive Event Savings: Event attendees receive a special 20% savings off our regular studio wall portraits, as well as access to special pricing like our Collection of Five Fine Art Portraits for $750.

  • Choose What You Love: At your private viewing appointment, you simply choose the portraits you love most. We will guide you through all the options and help you decide how you would like to see your favorites in print form. Whether that is a beautiful canvas for your wall or a bundle of fine art prints, you can apply your $195 credit toward any portrait products you choose.

  • Give Back to the Blue Ridge Parkway: A portion of the proceeds from every session is proudly donated to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.

How It Works

Step 1. Reserve Your Time

Click the registration link to choose your session time and pay your $195 registration fee. Because we only have 30 sessions available across the three days, these spots fill very quickly.


Step 2. Enjoy Your 12-Minute Session

Meet Jonathan and Bonnie at the Moses Cone Estate. We work quickly and make it incredibly fun for your kids, capturing beautiful expressions in just 12 minutes with an iconic Blue Ridge Parkway backdrop.

Step 3. Choose Your Portraits

Shortly after the event, you will have a private ordering appointment at our residential studio in Boone. We will project your proofs on the big screen so you can easily choose your favorites, apply your $195 credit, and take advantage of the special event savings.

A Few Questions We Hear a Lot

The weather is very changeable in the High Country. We will contact you by 3:00 PM on the day of your session if we think the forecast is dismal. We do not need perfect weather to create beautiful portraits, and there are wonderful sheltered areas where we can work. If we are completely unable to complete your session, we will schedule a make-up time.
Absolutely! We only have twelve minutes to create the portraits you are going to love. During that time, we can photograph a solo subject OR a group of siblings. If you have two children and you would like individual portraits and portraits of them together, simply sign up for three back-to-back sessions.
Some kids dress up and some come dressed casually. The most important thing to consider is where you will be enjoying these portraits in your home. We recommend coordinating colors that complement your decor and the natural greens and blues of the Parkway. Once you register, we will send you a complete guide on how to prepare!
Because this is a very fast-paced, 12-minute event, it is designed exclusively for school-aged children between 5 and 18 years old. If you have younger children or want a portrait of the whole family, we would love to schedule a standard, fully guided portrait session for you!
About one to two weeks after Portraits on the Parkway, you will come to our residential studio in Boone for a private viewing appointment. We project your proofs on a large screen so you can see them big and beautiful, choose your favorites, and apply your $195 registration credit toward any portrait products you love. It is a relaxed, unhurried appointment, and we guide you through every decision.
